Wow..

So the Catholics are at it again. Much like the way that "The Americans" are at it again- in that the leadership is oddly not representative of what I understand the constituents to be like.

So- how many of you know that this new pope Ratzinger is the head of the modern incarnation of The Inquisition? Oh- today it is called "the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith."

I am so disappointed in the Catholic Church. In a time when we really just need more love and understanding in the world- a world of tolerance for people to live and let live- enjoy life and be happy- the go and pick this guy to head the church.

Image and more behind LJ cut. Because one of these pictures might really offend some people. You Have Been Warned. Seriously.

I mean look at him- you KNOW he is still sad he missed out on the good old thumbscrew days...

Dude- they'd still be burning jews and heathens if they could.

Check out this link- take it cum granum.

Though- this time they will be burning gays.

How can you hate the gays? Really- they keep the streets of west hollywood so clean, they always walk their dogs and pick up the poop, your girlfriend will look at them, get all hot- and take you home and fuck *you* (Well- unless you are a catholic priest. Then- sadly- no girlfriend for you. Insert altar boy joke here). And they dress so smartly. Anyone that anal retentive and organized (have you SEEN Queer Eye for the Straight Guy?) can't be all bad. I mean- how non-threatening could they be?

So- the head of the inquisition is now head of the largest organized religion in the history of man.

Time to stock up on ammunition.

Or move to- where now? NOWHERE! You can escape American imperialism- but the teachings of Cathol are everywhere.

[info]rydot: Pope Nazi the I

Quoting George Carlin, as I am sometimes wont to do:
Catholics and other Christians are against abortions, and they're against homosexuals. Well who has less abortions than homosexuals? Leave these fucking people alone, for Christ sakes! Here is an entire class of people guaranteed never to have an abortion, and the Catholics and Christians are just tossing them aside! You'd think they'd make natural allies.

Okay, I'll have a go at this because, well, I'm Catholic.

Look, it's all really political and strategic and it has nothing to do with faith, God or other religious ideals. When you consider that the last Pope had entirely everything to do with the fall of Communism in Poland and subsequently the rest of communist Eastern Europe- the Church is very, very, very aware of the influence they have on world politics.

As for his involvement in Hitler Youth, he was conscripted into participation. Nazis = Bad. No fucking question there. But what gets lost here is that a lot of people are unable to separate that a lot of Germans got screwed by the Third Reich by default of being German and were forced along by a political juggernaut. So, in this guy's case- yeah he was in the Hitler Youth but so were a lot of other people and in both cases, no one actually had a choice about it. Some went willingly and signed up with their pathetic ideals - but most people in the face of war and extreme uncertainity will do what they have to do to just survive, political ideals can go take a walk. Well they did have a choice but the alternative was deportation to a work camp wherein you'd waste away in service of the Third Reich and maybe you'd survive it. So, in effect, that's like asking something if they'd rather have a hand chopped off or an eye poked out...

The Church isn't actually all that stupid though. If this guy was really as bad as being a Nazi for instance, they wouldn't have actually even considered electing him. The Church in the last decade has finally begun to acknowledge its silence and inaction during the Holocaust- they wouldn't undo all that reconciliation (or attempt at it) by putting someone who has Nazi ideals at the head.

A lot of people have this assumption I think that our Pope and other higher Church leaders have to be fluffy, happy and all heart- especially in the wake of recent scandals. But I personally, want someone as my Pope that can clearly see the difference between hearts and minds and act in the interest of the Church as a worldwide body.

[info]lifeofreilly: I know about the Hitler Youth thing

I know about the mandatory hitler youth thing. You do what you must to survive. Seriously.

However- ever the liberal that I am- I find his views, while predictable- not very in line with my own or those of most of my friends.

But like I said in another post: Hey- no skin off my nose. I am not Catholic, Female or Gay- so I think I'm fine.

[info]creepingivy: Re: I know about the Hitler Youth thing

Oh yeah, I know- I didn't mean to come off like a screaming ninny either but I'm already annoyed at the reactionary 'OMG NAZI NAZI! H8 HIM! EVIL!' by people that don't have a very good understanding of the issue. But how can I blame them at the same time because- well Nazi's incite reactions..

I shouldn't also, you're right be too surprised either by the reactions of most my friends. I am clearly in the political minority, as usual ;). It's cool though. This is just part of the deal.

There are lots of things that I find immense fault with the Church- as a woman and as a Catholic. I have a fundamental problem with the idea of a Pope in the first place, in some regard. But well, he's our Pope for now. And no matter how bad he fucks up (if he does at all), he'll die and we'll get a new one.
